Ireland, especially Dublin, is expensive by European standards, but costs vary around the country. €30 can be enough for the budget traveller. Tipping is becoming more common than it once was, but is still not as prevalent as in USA or the rest of Europe.

Geography: Ireland is located in Western Europe, west of Great Britain. Politically, the island is divided into Northern Ireland, a constituent part of Great Britain, and the Republic of Ireland.  Ireland is a unique blend of hills, bogs, lakes, rivers and remote islands with much of the country in the fertile central and eastern plateau -- almost completely surrounded by low mountains and coastal plains. Eight mountain ranges divide the island and support extensive forest lands. The west and north coasts feature spectacular sea cliffs. Besides the ever-waving waters surrounding the island, the River Liffey, running through Dublin on the east coast, is one of the most significant rivers in the country. Rising 12 miles south of the city, it flows in a huge crescent for over 80 miles before entering the sea at Dublin Bay. The Shannon, the longest river in Ireland, runs through pastureland and fertile farmland in the south.

Climate: The temperate climate is due to mild southwesterly winds and the Gulf Stream. Summers are warm, while temperatures during winter are much cooler. Spring and autumn are very mild. Rain falls all year, so be prepared for lots of it.

Recommended clothing: Lightweights during summer with warmer medium-weights for the winter. Rainwear is advisable throughout the year.
